Lake Highlands High School will host graduation ceremonies on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 pm at the Garland Special Events Center. Seating is limited, but the school can provide tickets if you’d like to go.

Actually, high school commencement can be a bit like receiving a whipping. It’s long and tiresome, and even the most faithful family members can be caught looking at their watches. But after attending a few times, I’ve learned to see high school graduation in a whole new light.

At my first LH graduation, I was upset to see all the whooping and hollering and general lack of decorum. For those of us who have a college degree (or two) and whose children have been wearing college tees since they entered preschool, graduation is kinda no big deal. But in our wonderful community with its awesome diversity, we have many students who will be the first in their family to graduate high school. Their aunts and grannies and neighbors will be celebrating like there’s no tomorrow. They’ll dress in their finest clothes and shout their loved one’s name. And I’ve learned to love that. Sincere thanks to those who taught me to enjoy and appreciate this wonderful evening. Congratulations to those who beat the odds to receive that diploma.
