Best all-time upsets? Some say 1980 when the U.S. beat the Soviets in Olympic ice hockey. Some insist it was Broadway Joe Namath winning Super Bowl 3 for the New York Jets. In Lake Highlands, we’re sure it was on March 29 when Terry Berrier’s AP Music Theory students defeated dynastic Plano West and Plano Senior High in the College Bowl music competition.

More than 180 students from 11 area high schools participated in the tenth annual competition, but it was the first time for Lake Highlands High to field a team. "We went there thinking we would get valuable practice for the AP test," said LH senior Lyndsey Jones, who also won first place individually. "We really didn’t expect to win."

Her mother, Crysta, was proud of the team. "A high score on the AP test means receiving college credit for music theory and thousands of dollars saved in tuition. We are proud of them for working so hard."

The students were tested and graded in the areas of sight-singing, melodic harmonization, harmonic and melodic diction, and other music knowledge. In addition to Lyndsey’s first place showing, Claire Daniels won third and Torsten Knabe placed fourth. Congratulations Musical Cats!
