Prescott Realty has been talking about getting a bookstore for the Lake Highlands Town Center, but with Borders and Barnes & Noble on the economic ropes these days, it doesn’t appear as if one of those two majors is up for the task.

But the Morning News reports this morning that a 24,000-square-foot independent bookstore — Legacy Books — plans to open later this summer in the Shops at Legacy center at the Tollway and Legacy Drive in Plano. And that certainly offers a little hope here for Prescott’s plans.

The News notes that Borders has lost $300 million in the past two years, while Barnes & Noble’s net profit fell 10% last year and isn’t likely to do any better this year; that’s what makes the story of an independent bookstore popping up all the more interesting.

A good idea in terms of survival: The bookstore in Plano plans to offer books and magazines, of course, but also an area for cooking demonstrations, a coffee bar and what is described as a "separate Wi-Fi bar."
