Sure there’s plenty of fun to be had about town this weekend but a couple extra cool kid-centered events are happening in the Highlands.

One of our faithful contributors wrote earlier about Hoops in the Highlands Saturday at Highland Oaks Church of Christ. A similar three-on-three junior high basketball showdown called the Shamrock Shootout is happening this afternoon and tonight at St. Patrick’s Catholic school on Ferndale. I was at the first phase of the tournament last night and, wow — this is fast-moving fun-to-watch game. But don’t take you eye of the ball — I saw at least two onlookers get hit.

Tonight is also the father-daughter Girl Scout dance at 7 p.m. in the Merriman Park Elementary cafeteria, with the Lake Highlands Wranglers leading the music and dancing. (Hopefully we’ll see some cute pictures from that one).

And tomorrow, weather permitting, the 8th grade from St. Bernard will hold a car wash at the Sonic on Garland Road. Sure it’s a little outside our ‘hood, but these kids are working hard to raise money for a graduation event, and many of them live in Lake Highlands.
