For those of you who think owning a car dealership will put you on the fast track to easy money, check out the News’ recent story on Jim Snell, who operates a Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership in Richardson and a Land Rover dealership on Central. Think about this: Snell tells the News that when his father owned the domestic-car dealership in the late 1970s, the business sold 3,000 new cars each year; last year, a new, modern facility with the same brands sold about 700 vehicles — that’s a pretty big drop. The story also notes that each year, 100-300 dealerships close in the U.S.; just a few months ago, Troy Aikman Ford bit the dust just down Central from Snell’s Rover dealership. This is an interesting story with a conclusion that probably shouldn’t be surprising these days: The car business, like just about every business, is getting more difficult, and nothing is guaranteed.
