Once again, it takes an elected official who doesn’t want the highway named after them to tell the truth about the Belo Parkway. Yesterday, U.S. Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson said that the toll road "is a needed roadway." This echoes the comments of Stae Sen. John Carona, who told Back Talk last week that the toll road was crucial to relieving congestion in the Mixmaster.

This is a far cry from city officials, who keep insisting that the toll road is an integral part of the Belo World park project. Wamre has already dissected Sunday’s editorial in Dallas’ Only Daily Newspaper, but let me add this: How many editorial writers, columnists, and the like at The News will actually set foot in the park when it’s built? And how many of them will use the toll road to get from their suburban garages to their downtown parking lot without ever stepping foot in the park?

I did laugh at one comment Johnson made. "I deeply regret that voters, once again, have been asked to return to the voting booth to weigh in on a matter that has been decided nine years ago," she said. Gee, Congresswoman, I could have sworn you were up for election every two years. Thought that was what democracy was about. I guess I was wrong, though. Guess that stuff about referendum and recall is just foolishness, and we’re just supposed to do what our betters tell us to do.
