In March 2002, hundreds of Lake Highlands residents were polled as to what types of retail we wanted to see developed in our neighborhood. Thirty-eight percent were most eager to see better restaurants. But more specifically, we wanted places that offer “casual family dining.” Less than three years later, we’re getting that wish. Highlands Cafe – the restaurant everyone seems to already know about because it’s owned and financed by 20 neighborhood residents – opened in late October. The concept, owners say, is similar to that of Cafe Express, but with not quite as extensive of a menu. Offerings range from the simple – chicken tenders, Caesar salad – to the more hearty and complicated – Osso Busco-style petit pork shanks, nachos topped with artichoke hearts, green olives, mushrooms, feta and over-roasted tomatoes, pictured here. And speaking of nachos, the owners are hoping that their five different takes on the chips-and-cheese fare will become the restaurant’s signature grub.
