Think of it this way…when the home tour hosted by the Lake Highlands Women’s League started, shag carpet, macramé plant hangers and latch-hook rugs weren’t even out of vogue.

Whoa. Thankfully, popular taste in home décor has changed. But the Holiday in the Highlands Home Tour, begun 25 years ago in 1978, hasn’t.

The tour still showcases four of Lake Highlands most spectacular homes. What makes this event different from other home tours throughout the year is the homes are done up in their best holiday finery. Another thing that’s different is how much money is raised – this year, the Women’s League is hoping the community will turn out for the same kind of support that, in years past, has raised nearly $80,000 for scholarships and community project funds.

“We’re just overwhelmed every year that we make as much as we do. It’s a lot of money,” says Carol Baker, LHWL spokesperson. “But it’s because it’s a great neighborhood. The people are generous, and they know it goes for a great cause.”

This year’s featured homes include Bob and Donna Chereck’s, shown here, a traditional house filled with English antiques. Also included will be a new-construction home inspired by the style of the Texas Hill Country, Baker says.

A corresponding luncheon and bazaar will be held at Highlands Oaks Church of Christ, 10805 Kingsley. The bazaar will feature numerous holiday crafts and baked goods donated by the Women’s League, as well as items offered by many other vendors.

Holiday in the Highlands home tour will be held Friday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The bazaar begins at 9:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. The luncheon is $10, and tickets must be purchased in advance due to limited seating. Home tour tickets are $10 in advance or $12 the day of the tour, available at the church or by calling the number below.
