A national fitness magazine ranked Dallas among the country’s 10 fattest cities this year. Houston headed the list for the past two years, and in general, Texas cities make a large showing in the top 20.

We don’t know how that magazine determines its rankings, but if we had to make a quick guess at one thing that makes Texans fat, our decidedly unscientific answer would come in two words: Mexican food.

Of course, what we’d really mean is Tex-Mex food: fajitas, nachos, enchiladas and the like, slathered with cheese, swimming in grease, with generous sides of sour cream, guacamole and refried beans.

Yumm…Now then, where were we? Oh, yes…

You can find that stuff on probably three out of four busy intersections in Dallas. But if you don’t want to be one of the many things that are bigger in Texas, you should try a more authentic place, where you can enjoy the flavors of Mexico without the fat of Tex-Mex.

A good place to start is Mexico Lindo. It’s a laid-back neighborhood spot that serves excellent Mexican food. And though its extensive menu does offer Tex-Mex items, the restaurant specializes in seafood. Most of those dishes, like the Bagre (Catfish) a la Veracruzana, shown here, are light meals with subtle flavors and healthy vegetables.

As with most authentic Mexican restaurants, knowing a bit of Spanish helps in communicating with the staff. But the waitresses are friendly and eager to help, so that even the terminally mono-lingual can get by with a point at the menu and a smile.
