Lake Highlands High School students past and present can support the school band at the same time they get decked out for Homecoming on Oct. 24.

The Lake Highlands Area Band Club has begun its annual mum sale, with orders being taken during lunch period up to the Monday before the big day. The club also will take mum orders during the Oct. 17 home game the week before Homecoming.

Basic mums start at $15; armbands for the guys are available for $9. Those ordering will have the option of making their mums as ornate and detailed as desired. Among the extra accessories that can be ordered are little bear dolls wearing drill team uniforms or other costumes representative of school groups.

“They pick the accessories, and no two mums are alike,” says Paula Tharp, chairman for the sale. Tharp says all proceeds from this fund-raiser go to the band’s general fund, where it is used for activities such as band competitions outside the state or the city and instruction by private tutors.

“We want to emphasize that the money we make does not go to a person; the money goes back to a kid in school,” Tharp says. “It’s for the kids.”

And keeping the band playing in tune provides a nice accompaniment for all those games won by the Wildcats. “Our community has a really good band that goes along with our football team,” says Tharp.

“You wouldn’t want to have a great football team and a crummy band out there,” she adds with a laugh.
