Movies 6 at Skillman and LBJ recently has been reopened by Cinemark Theaters.

The theater formerly was owned by the United Artists chain and was operating as a dollar theater when Cinemark purchased it about six months ago.

“That’s a really great neighborhood, and we felt like theater would do good business with a little upgrading,” says Randy Hester, director of corporate development.

“It’s really well-located, and it’s easy to get to.”

Cinemark kept the theater open during most of the upgrading, although the building was closed for a few weeks in June to complete the final touches.

The renovation included moving the concession stand, converting an office into an arcade and decorating everything in Cinemark’s trademark neon colors and checkered patterns.

“Lots of times, people like to have a neighborhood theater they can go to,” Hester says. “Unfortunately, this one had deteriorated over the past few years, and no one was showing up.

“We tried to make it look as much like the Hollywood (Cinemark’s massive theater at LBJ and Northwest Highway) as we could, given what we had to work with.”

“Now you have a top-of-the-line neighborhood theater.”

Arboretum Cookbook Takes Residence at White House

A small memento of the Dallas Arboretum now sits in the White House.

The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden recently published “The Garden Gourmet,” a cookbook made up of recipes from Arboretum docents and patrons. When President Clinton’s brother, Roger, was married at the Arboretum in March, both Clinton brothers were presented with a copy of the cookbook. The President’s copy will remain in the Presidential Library after he leaves office.

“The Garden Gourmet” contains recipes from such famous Arboretum patrons as Mayor Steve Bartlett, Realtor Ebby Halliday and comedian Bob Hope. It is available at Borders Books and Pier 1 Imports. Proceeds help fund the repair and maintenance of the DeGoyler House, which sits on the Arboretum grounds.
