Even if the City is slow in implementing curbside recycling, it is moving forward with other environmental ventures.

Or it’s trying to.

A newspaper recycling program, using receptacles donated by Wal-Mart and the private contractor who will collect the newspaper, has started. But only 5 of 22 proposed sites have actually received the bins because no groups have expressed an interest in sponsoring bins at the other 17 locations.

This may be because of the large size of the 20- and 40-cubic yard containers. Or because they’re obviously not as cute as those little igloos.

Whatever the reason, the bins are ready to go.

Some of the proposed sites are with the igloos. Being able to drop off your newspaper every time you recycle your glass and aluminum is worth having a few large bins around. Just think how much neater your household recycling centers are bound to be.

The closest newspaper recycling for our neighborhoods are:

  • Norbuck Park, 200 North Buckner at Peavy (parking lot) near White Rock Lake.
  • Fair Oaks Transfer Station, 7677 Fair Oaks (parking lot area) in Lake Highlands.
  • Chimney Hills Homeowners Association, 9223 Smokefeather at Flickering Shadow (north tennis court parking lot) in north Lake Highlands.

Recycling newspapers should be easy. Just dump them in the bin, slicks included. There will be signs reminding you not to include other types of paper. Don’t leave the newspapers in grocery sacks or bundle them; just toss them in loose.

Judging by how many mounds of newspapers are left at the igloos, there’s a real need for these bins.

Here’s a scenario where the City is on top of things, but is not having any luck. If your organization is interested in sponsoring a bin, call the Recycling Office at 670-4475.

There are a few conditions to meet, such as a concrete foundation and the right amount of space for truck access. If the sponsor of your neighborhood igloos has been contacted about a newspaper bin, and hasn’t responded, ask them what they’re waiting for. Here’s a chance to express our interest in terrific environmental program – and just think of all the trees we’ll save.
