We know there are plenty of events in the works to commemorate White Rock Lake’s 100-year birthday during 100 days in March, April and May but we don’t have a lot of specifics yet. We do know that Ebby Halliday, who will also turn 100 next year, will serve as honorary chair and that members of more than 25 lake-area non profit organizations will be involved in the planning and festivities. I also recently found out that the Dallas Running Club will put on a White Rock Lake Centennial Half Marathon Saturday, May 7 at White Rock’s Winfrey Point. Registration is already open and they will limit the event to 2011 runners, which means minimal inconvenience for homeowners and commuters in surrounding areas. If you were inspired by the recent White Rock Marathon, you might consider getting on board with the half-marathon training program offered by the Dallas Running Club and signing up for this “once in a lifetime” event. I suspect the Centennial run will take place of the usual White Rock ‘n’ Roll 5k and 10-mile race that happens that weekend each year. No word yet on whether Ebby will run the half.
Today’s podcast is about disagreements and differences with those around you, and Lake Highlands High School’s Nathan Schulman has a few things to say on that topic. Nathan’s a junior on the Academic Decathlon team and he wrestles for Coach Pete Grieder, but apparently he’s a writer, too. In his essay for the Dallas Morning News on Sunday, he asks if the Glee-style high school “popularity scale” really exists, and, if it does, can people with so many differences in so many divided groups ever learn to fit in and get along?
If you missed Nathan’s “Student Voices” column, I think you’ll enjoy reading it here.
The Lake Highlands High boys basketball team went 3-1 at the 2010 Allen Eagles Basketball Tournament over the weekend.
The Wildcats lost their second consecutive game after losing to Plano on Tuesday, in a close match-up against Frisco Wakeland 48-45 in the opening round on Thursday. Trey Bingham leading the team in scoring with 18 points and James Preston adding 15 points.
Lake Highlands routed Lubbock Coronado 78-54 on Friday with Taylor Stell pouring in 22 points and three other Wildcats in double-digits.
The Wildcats beat Allen, 67-58, and Georgetown, 63-50, on Saturday to round out the tournament.
Lake Highlands will open the District 9-5A schedule at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Samuel at Forester Field House.
The Lake Highlands High wrestling team swept the weekend with five straight dual wins, beginning with Highland Park, Berkner, Wylie East, Arlington Heights and Keller Central, respectively.
“This was a good weekend for Lake Highland’s wrestling,” Pete Grieder, Lake Highlands head coach said. “We have now established ourselves as one of the better teams in the area after knocking off Keller Central”.
The Wildcats beat Highland Park 63-10 on Friday, then hosted four other teams on Saturday. In the dual wins LHHS beat Berkner 47-28, Wylie East 78-9, Arlington Heights 81-3 and Keller Central 49-31.
Juniors Duncan Mcauley, Nathan Schulman, Biak Thang, Lee Lueder and Ryan Branch and Sophomore Deandre Brumfield and freshman Thayer Atkins all went undefeated for the weekend.
To add even more intrigue, this is not even the complete Wildcats team yet.
“After Christmas we hope to get three senior captains back in the lineup,” Grieder said. “Reid Zambardino, Braden Fair and DD Fields, all have been out the first half of the season with injuries.”
The JV team shutout Highland Park Friday winning all 14 matches 75-0. That bodes well for the future of this program.
LHHS will compete in the Saginaw tournament on Friday and Saturday before taking a break for the Christmas holidays. The Wildcats are 18-1 in dual meets heading into the Christmas holiday’s.
Music lovers are in for a treat over the holidays as the Fightin’ Aggie Marching Band of Texas A&M University comes to Lake Highlands to rehearse for their Cotton Bowl appearance January 7th against LSU. They’ll be practicing at Wildcat Stadium and they invite you to swing by and give them a “whoop,” especially LHHS grads Stephanie Turner, a junior, and Tyler Patton, a freshman (or fish as they are called in the Corps).
Stephanie’s mom, Lisa, reports that she’s tickled pink to be rehearsing on home turf. Here’s their schedule:
Scott Hanks and Desmond Roland were two unanimously selections to the 2010 District 9-5A All District Team First Team.
Roland also earned district most valuable player honors, and nine other players were selected to the All-District Team.
Senior cornerback and kicker David Green also earned honors in both positions.

Lake Highlands High and Richardson were all knotted up at halftime Tuesday night. The Lady Eagles, however, made enough stops in the third and fourth quarters to take home a 40-33 win at Lake Highlands.
Tierra Scott scored 14 of the Lady Wildcats 33 points, but a four-point third quarter put Lake Highlands deep in the barrel.
Lake Highlands lost the fourth quarter 12-11, but simply couldn’t recover for the win. It was the Lady Wildcats second consecutive home loss and second consecutive loss in District 9-5A.
Lake Highlands will get their next shot at a district win Monday at W.T. White.
