Update: The second individual killed in this morning’s shooting on Whitehurst Drive has been identified as Julio Gerardo Delarosa an 18-years-old Latin male, police say. He was a Lake Highlands High School student.

Details are limited on two separated murders that occurred back-to-back within about a mile of each other last night in Lake Highlands, but police believe the two acts of violence were drug-related.

In the first incident, 19-year-old Derek Jordan was found dead of a gunshot wound at an apartment complex in the 9900 block of Whitehurst Lane around 12:30 a.m.

Moments later, police were dispatched to a second shooting in the 9500 block of Royal Lane, where another 19-year-old man was found bleeding from a bullet wound. He was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity is not being released because his next of kin have not yet been notified.

Police said in their press release, “This investigation is still ongoing, but it appears that both victims were involved in a drug transaction at 9911 Whitehurst Drive.” They believe Jordan and another accomplice planned to rob the other victim during a drug deal at the Whitehurst apartment complex.

Although police and the local community have recently made a big push to make the Forest-Audelia neighborhood more safe, violent crimes continue to climb in the northeast neighborhood.
