Molly and Sadie Bono
This Friday night, don’t miss Sadie’s Night at the Ballpark, where a genuine local celebrity will be on the mound at Lake Highlands High School for first pitch. Four-year-old Sadie Bono was born with similar craniofacial syndromes, and the Wildcat baseball team is hosting Sadie’s Night to raise funds for the Children’s Craniofacial Association. As Sadie takes the field to start the game, parents Justin & Debbie Bono will be on hand to cheer her on.
The idea was the brainchild of Coach Corey Tucker, who started Sadie’s Night last year. It was his first year coaching at LHHS, and he wanted his team to be involved in the community.
You can support the CCA by purchasing jewelry handmade by Tucker’s wife, Ginny. She offers bracelets made from baseballs used in the batting cages of the Frisco Rough Riders and the Texas Rangers or baseball drop necklaces, each for $5, or she can personalize them for an additional $2. Proceeds go to the CCA, and you can contact Ginny to order jewelry by emailing her at ginny_tucker@allenisd.org.
A portion of concessions will also go to CCA, and donations will be gratefully accepted.
In addition to the fun and funds, Sadie’s mom says awareness and acceptance make a big difference in the lives of these children and others like them.
“By increasing the number of people in the community that know Sadie,” she told me last year, “she has advocates to counter the inevitable teasing, questions and stares that will come as she grows up.”
Look for Sadie on the mound at 7:15 Friday night, but don’t be late. Richardson High is a worthy opponent, but it’ll be Sadie drawing the crowd. Entrance to all LHHS home baseball games is free.
