It’s become a tradition now, a solid six years running, that every May we run a collection of stories in the magazine about high school seniors who have overcome massive obstacles to make it to graduation — and these kids aren’t just getting there, squeaking by, but arriving at the commencement with great achievements in academics, sport and the arts, collectively.  (Here are our 2011 and 2012 examples).

In our upcoming issue, we will profile five Lake Highlands High School seniors with exceptional stories. These young people *pulled themselves up by their bootstraps to stand as an example of what one who refuses to make excuses can accomplish. (*The rule around here is to avoid cliches and oft-used idioms, but when I think of the kids we are profiling this year, I can’t help it).

Hannah, pictured below, endured an unthinkable loss just before school started. Yet she filled the empty parts of her life with positive work and activity. She even starred in this year’s high school musical.

Danny Fulgencio photographed the covers for all of our five neighborhood magazines this month. He had an opportunity to sit in on several of the interviews, during which he developed a sort-of ‘out of darkness into the light’ idea for the theme. This is an example of the shoot for the Lake Highlands Advocate.
