Wine and dine: Romantic Dallas, President’s Day, Gruet

sparklingwinethumb Dallas is one of the most romantic cites for dining out in the country, though not quite as romantic as San Antonio, Austin or Houston. That’s the result of a survey from OpenTable, the on-line restaurant service. Dallas is No. 11 on the list, while the other Texas cities were 1,2, and 10.

Highland Park Cafeteria will celebrate President’s Day on Feb. 18 with $6 cherry pies. Also, children under 10 can eat free with the purchase of an adult meal.

• Wine of the week: Gruet Brut ($13) used to be famous as New Mexican wine, but even today, when it’s made with California grapes, it’s a solid entry level bubbly. Look for lots of tiny bubbles, some crisp green apple and a little something more than most bubbly at this price has. Widely available.

I have eaten in some of the finer restaurants in Dallas, San Francisco, Miami, New Orleans, NYC, Chicago, etc. and The French Room was by far my favorite.  It is an exquisite dining experience.
