I recently went to Bonnie Ruth’s Cafe and Catering for the first time ever. It’s a shame that I’ve lived in this area for so long yet had always overlooked the tiny spot in Casa Linda. Man, what I’ve been missing!

In August we featured the Bonnie Ruth’s Seared Ahi tuna salad, which I had a hankering for last Tuesday night. The salad is divine, made with a large tuna steak sliced and seared over a bed of greens, olives and tomato confit and tossed in a shallot vinaigrette. It’s hearty — I took half of it home for next day lunch. Of course that might have something to do with the soft buttery bread I ate pre-salad, and the food I nabbed of my children’s plates: the grilled chicken, pepper and onion pizza — made on premise from handmade dough and piled high with the toppings baked into a thick layer if mozzarella — and a hot carved oven-roasted turkey sandwich — soft and savory on Italian loaf with a side salad and chips.

When I sat down, my first reaction was that the prices were questionable for my eat-out-three-nights-a-week budget—the salad was $12.25, the pizza was $9.25, and the sandwich $9.25 — but once I tasted the food, I knew we had scored a deal. This is quality fare. The spongy-looking blueberry cake was calling my name but I resisted (I know I’ll be back for you).

I hear Bonnie Ruth’s serves a mean breakfast brunch too— they apparently have to-die-for French toast. Also, they have great drink specials throughout the week, for example, $3 Martini Night is every Thursday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. More here on their web site. Bonnie Ruth’s Cafe and Catering is located at 1152 N. Buckner Blvd. The Cafe hours are Mon.: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Tues. and Wed.: 11 a.m.-9 p.m.; Thurs.-Sat.: 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and brunch is served Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-noon and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
