 Meet Your Neighbor: Rita Greenfield
“Fit as a fiddle and ready for love!” That’s become Rita Greenfield’s trademark response to 36 years’ worth of “How are ya, Miss Rita?”s. If what she says doesn’t give you a pointed glimpse into the 89-year-old’s personality, the way she says it — with an innocent smile and a mischievous twinkle behind the eyes — will. With a quick wit and a whole lotta love to give, Miss Rita has won the hearts of generations of Wildcats from her desk at the Lake Highlands High School switchboard. Miss Rita, who is retiring this month, took up her post in 1972, just two years after Bob Iden graduated from the school. Almost 30 years later, as the school principal, Dr. Iden gave Miss Rita her very own parking spot as an 80th birthday gift. New principal Walter Kelley has said the spot will stay, as is. Says long time co-worker Karen Clardy, “Miss Rita goes to all the football games, shows and events. She is like everyone’s grandma. Everyone loves her so much — it will be impossible to fill her shoes.” What’s Miss Rita’s secret for winning friends and influencing everyone whose lives she touches? “I really love people. You won’t find a person out there that I dislike.”

The entire community is invited to Miss Rita’s retirement reception:
WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 8, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Lake Highlands High School library
