When I was a tween (before the word tween was part of our vernacular), my mom used to drag me around to all the local resale shops. Back then they were just called “Goodwill” (all of them —kind of like dubbing all sodas “Cokes”) and they certainly weren’t cool. Mom swore she’d get me dressed just as smartly as those other girls … at a fraction of the price. From what I recall, I usually looked relatively stylish. (It’s tough to tell — I mean no one looks good in high-waist, tapered, acid-washed jeans sporting a forehead full of frizzy bangs that reached heights of three inches or more.)
Yeah. I was hot, for sure. But God forbid any of those other girls spotted me at the shameful thrift store. My reputation would be ruined.
Thankfully, we now live in a world where resale shops are socially acceptable. Chic even. And an awesome one opened right here in our hood last summer.
World of Goods, 10675 E. Northwest Highway (next to Kroger’s), not only has clothes, shoes, books and home accessories, but they also have a superior furniture selection: bed frames, couches, dressers, etcetera. Even better, they seem to have an impressive variety of unique, dare I say, bizarre items including old posters and frames and a suit of armor. Yes, right there in the window you’ll see it. A suit of armor. The store supports the Catholic Charities of Dallas’ family assistance and refugee resettlement services. Right here on their web site you can find and print a coupon for 10 percent off any purchase. The only complaint I have is that they close at 6 p.m. every day so I can’t make it in during the week — unless of course I’m “researching” a post for the Back Talk Blog. They are closed Sundays, and always accept donations during regular hours. They also pick up.
