El Fenix Mexican Restaurant at Skillman and Audelia will close its doors at the end of April.
Lake Highlands resident and Merriman Park mom Blythe Harrell Grates, Senior Marketing Director at Firebird Restaurant Group, which owns El Fenix, posted a message today on Nextdoor.com announcing the news. She invited friends and neighbors to relish a margarita and enchilada special one last time.
“After 23 years of serving Lake Highlands,” Grates wrote, “El Fenix on Skillman will be closing on 4/28 at 6 pm. Please be sure to come in and enjoy that original Tex Mex.”
El Fenix has outlasted Sweet Temptations, formerly located next door, Galveston Island, which long ago hosted Exchange Club meetings, and other restaurants moving in and out over the years.
After the final sangria is served, you’ll be able to get tacos and tequila at nearby El Fenix locations at Casa Linda and Mesquite.
The Dallas Morning News wrote today that the flagship downtown building is up for sale, along with the adjoining Meso Maya and Taqueria La Ventana. According to a statement sent to Advocate Tuesday, Firebird plans to keep all three restaurants open and operating as tenants at that Uptown location, and maybe even add new restaurants to a future development. The 4-acre site near Klyde Warren Park will likely be redeveloped as a combination of large office buildings, apartments and hotels, the statement indicated, bringing additional traffic and density to the area.
“This is an exciting opportunity for Dallas to continue to develop vibrancy in our city center,” wrote Mike Karns, founder and CEO of Firebird, “adding to the energy of increased office, residential restaurant and cultural amenities.”
