It was a crowded scene in the LH student center at 8 a.m. Wednesday for National Signing Day, when seniors can sign letters of intent committing to college scholarship offers in football and certain other sports.
A total of 11 seniors were honored in ceremonies for those who will have the opportunity to continue their athletic careers in college.
Not all were signing athletic scholarships. Some were given preferential offers of admission or had academic scholarships combined with invitations to join the athletic program. Ivy League institutions such as Harvard, where quarterback Ricky Zorn is going, do not offer athletic scholarships, but players identified by the football program have preferred admission status. Kicker Jason Dann is a preferred walk-on to Nebraska, where such status has been the path for a number of Huskers stars through the years. Samantha Couch was granted an academic scholarship to Trinity, but her close ties to the basketball program will allow her to continue playing.
Of course, whether it was a walk-on offer, a full-ride, partial or academic scholarship, it was a proud moment for parents and athletes alike. Signing Day represented the culmination of a lot of years of hard work, both on and off the playing field.
