From the opening number “Oh, the Things You Can Think!” to the big finish “Green Eggs ‘N Ham,” Seussical is a lively, enjoyable Broadway-style musical put on by the students of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church. ACT, as they’re called, short for Artists of Christian Talent, the students in grades 7-12 clearly get a kick out of putting on a show. The musical features the quirky characters of Dr. Seuss’ classic books, including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Mayzie LaBird, The Grinch and the people of Whoville. The show opens tonight at the church at 7 pm and the kids are hoping for a big crowd since tomorrow’s a school holiday.

“Before I go onstage, I’m scared a little,” admitted junior Hannah Volker, who plays Mayzie. “But once the lights come on, I really become Mayzie. Its very exciting.

More after the jump — and we have a slideshow:

“I really like the cast – we’ve all become close,” said Libby Seeley, also a junior. “It’s been fun getting to know kids from all grades. We’re like family now.”

“Being in Seussical has taught me patience,” said Priscilla Wasson, who stars as Miss Gertrude McFuzz. “It involves many hours of hard work for such a short time onstage, but it’s worth it.” Her solos include “Notice Me Horton”, “One Feather Tail”, and – her favorite – “All For You.”

Senior Tim Wall, always fun to watch, stars as Horton, and seniors Bradley Paterik and Megan Hancock play The Mayor and Mrs. Mayor. LHHS graduates Dana Carlson, Hannah Payne and Jennifer Welden have returned to serve as director, musical director and choreographer.

“We’ve had to learn to balance our schoolwork with our practice schedule. We’ve had to be disciplined,” Libby told me. And her message to LH? “Come out and see the show. You’ll enjoy it.”

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and are available by emailing Michele Brockett for the shows Feb. 11, 12, 19 and 20 at 7 pm and the Valentine’s Day matinee at 2 pm.
