Senior Curry Young ran the second-fastest time in the state in the 100 meters last Friday in what was a big weekend for the Lake Highlands track team heading into this week’s Texas Relays.

The girls team and a few of the boys competed at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Relays where Young ran a 11.29 to place second behind Mesquite Poteet’s Veronica Jones who finished in a state-best 11.18. Fellow senior Paige McCutcheon was fifth in 11.82.

Young also won the 200, while McCutcheon placed third in the 400. London Johnson picked up two sixth-place finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

The rest of the boys team competed in the prestigious Jesuit Sheaner Relays. The boys tied for fifth out of 30 scoring teams with 36 points. Junior Meron Fessahaie won the 3,200 meters in 9:33.21 and James Bearden won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches.

Isaac Grieder placed second in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet. David Green placed fourth in the 200 while Ronnie Jordan was sixth in the 110 hurdles. Zack Knickman took sixth in the discus.

The relay teams took sixth in the 4×200, seventh in the 4×400 and eighth in the 4×100. 

The team travels to Austin this weekend for the Texas Relays, the biggest meet of the year outside of the state meet.
