Flag burning — no, really. It’s the right thing to do.
Neighbor Jeannette Prasifka is on a mission to make sure the American flag gets its due respect. That’s why she plans to host a flag retirement ceremony, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. at Flag Pole Hill, in which she will destroy about 300 worn out flags from collected from homes, offices and schools via her organization (oldwornflag.com) .
According to Title 4, §8(k) of the United States Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting symbol for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
District 10 Councilman Jerry Allen will deliver an address before the ceremony, and Bugles Across America, a traveling band of buglers, will play TAPS in remembrance of fallen soldiers.
If you happen to have a flag to retire, this is a good time to do it, organizers say. The first 50 residents to show up at the ceremony with a flag for retirement will receive a new United States flag courtesy of the Betsy Ross Flag Girls, Inc.
Last July, the Dallas Morning News ran this story about Prasifka’s efforts to ensure the proper retirement of flags.
