Carson Brown goes to City Hall

Dallas City Councilman Adam McGough has appointed Carson Brown, a sophomore at Lake Highlands High School, to serve on the Dallas Youth Commission. Carson is one of 15 students from across the city who will meet monthly to learn about Dallas and advocate on behalf of young people.

“I am interested in the Dallas Youth Commission because I have always wanted to know how my local government works,” Carson told me. “I am hoping to hear what teens like me want to have done in District 10 and to do as much as I can to make sure those things happen.”

Carson is the son of Allison and Chad Brown.

“We all seem to have very differing backgrounds,” said Carson, who has met with a few of the group members already. “We all come from varying schools.”

“I think the best part about being on this committee will be the important people I will have the chance to meet. The worst will probably be hearing about the not-so-great things that happen in our district,” he said.

The mission of the group is “to inspire Dallas youth to become lifelong civic leaders actively engaged in assisting policy makers and promoting advocacy. This will be accomplished by hosting regular and active civic engagement opportunities for youth to: build leadership skills; learn how municipal government decision-making takes place; develop and implement advocacy strategies to youth constituents and participate in community service projects.”

“I hope to learn about Dallas’ government,” said Carson, who plans to attend the University of Texas or Texas A&M when he graduates in 2018, “and I look forward to learning about what I may want to do after high school.”

Carson’s next stop is to attend the DYC retreat. Congratulations, Carson!
