The Governor of Texas has declared this Literacy Week, and the Texas PTA is celebrating with a new program called SMART – Start Meeting and Reading Together. The program aims to encourage families to spend a few moments each day reading together, both quietly and aloud, and to reach out to other less-fortunate families in the PTA spirit of volunteerism and caring. The PTA celebrates its 100th birthday this year, with Centennial events scheduled throughout the school year to recognize their work advocating for good schools and great students.

Barnes and Noble stores are partnering with the PTA, organizing a statewide Book Fair and pledging to kickback a percentage of sales to the Texas PTA. Just visit your favorite Barnes and Noble store today thru Sunday (I like the shop at Lincoln Park across from NorthPark, but the store at Preston Royal is good, too), and present the book fair flyer available online here.
