Run by Lake Highlands neighbor Rebecca Hamlin, NTWC provides rehabilitation for injured and abandoned wildlife in the Dallas area. In June, it was announced that the center would be forced to vacate its current facility due to zoning issues with the City of Plano.

According to an NTWC post from June 27, the City gave notice to vacate its current facility in Plano within 60 days despite having a permit. The issue mainly arose from increased foot traffic seen at the facility located in a residential neighborhood, the post clarified.

In order to secure a permanent facility, NTWC set a fundraising goal of $250,000 for a down payment.

On July 28, the center took to Facebook to announce it had raised $227,000 of its original goal. Most of the funds seem to have come from sources other than the center’s GoFundMe page, which has raised over $6,000 for the effort. Donations can be made through the page or the NTWC website.

The North Texas Wildlife Center was founded in 2013 as the Dallas Wildlife Center. Since then, the center has hosted multiple events in Lake Highlands, with the most recent being a second birthday party for Coconut, the white opossum, at Vector Brewing in February.
