Old Flame Candle Co. owner and Lake Highlands neighbor Jaclyn King has teamed up with Emily May of Brass Bluebonnet Vintage for the 14-piece line of one-of-a-kind vessels filled with non-toxic, paraben-free wax. Curated by May, the line made its debut on Tuesday, with six remaining as of July 18.

Most of the candles come in secondhand brass vessels sourced by May from eBay and local estate sales, with only a couple coming in glass. She chose the scents — peach rosé and grapefruit tea — to embody the essence of the summer season. Each piece is also named after a significant woman in May’s life.

“For example, the big brass one, it was named Caitlin after my three-year-old niece, who is just the proverbial strawberry of my eye,” May said. “I adore her.”

She started Brass Bluebonnet Vintage during the pandemic, as her house piled up with vintage pieces, a long-time passion of hers.

When the opportunity for a collaboration arose with King, who also uses vintage vessels for virtually all of her products, May jumped at the idea.

“It really felt like it was a no-brainer, because we just align on so much as fellow vintage-obsessed female entrepreneurs in the Dallas area,” she said. “It kind of just felt a little bit serendipitous, because we do just align on so many fronts.”

Old Flame Candle Co. launched around the same time as May’s business. King, a former freelance designer, lives off White Rock Trail with her husband and small children. Her brand specializes in natural wax products and boutique candle vessels.

Much like May’s business, Old Flame offers a wide array of brass products.

“I feel like it’s just timeless and classic,” King said. “I mean, I hate to use those two cliché words, but it really is.”

One of the main points of focus for the collaboration is sustainability. Whereas most candle vessels are mass-produced and thrown away after use, the Old Flame x Brass Bluebonnet special edition products are meant to stand the test of time.

“You can either repurpose it, like, let’s say it’s a brass planter. You can repurpose it as a planter, or you can send it in for a refill and perhaps you get to try out a new fragrance that you didn’t have in the candle,” Kind said.

The candles can be shipped nationwide and ordered on the Old Flame website.
