Hootie and the Blowfish named an album after it. College kids swear by it. Late shift workers rely on it. Soon, Lake Highlands neighbors will have a brand-new Waffle House all our own.

The Lake Highlands Waffle House is currently under construction next to Braum’s Ice Cream at 9777 Greenville Avenue. The now-vacant land was home to Spasso Pizza and Pasta in the 1990s, then the building housed Colonial Jewelry & Loan pawn shop before being razed a few years later. The new Forest Green Library is set to open Sept. 25 just a couple doors down. No opening date for Waffle House has been announced.

Waffle House, founded in 1955 in small-town Georgia, now has 1,900 locations in 25 states. Each is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year-round. While the menu is heavy on breakfast favorites served around the clock, you may also order typical diner fare, such as burgers, ham steaks, patty melts and pecan pie.

For now, the nearest Waffle House is at Jupiter and Kingsley in Garland or on Spring Valley near 75 in Richardson. If you’re a big fan, join the Regulars’ Club online here and get a free order of hash browns.
