On Sept. 3, Willie B. Johnson staff shared via social media that Everson Walls visited the recreation center for a senior event. Walls met community members and stood for pictures, with one shared to a Facebook group shortly after.

Walls was raised in the Hamilton Park neighborhood and attended Berkner High School. He didn’t play a single game of football until his senior year, when he led the district in interceptions, according to an archival magazine biography.

After playing cornerback for Grambling, Walls signed as an undrafted free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 1981. In his time with the Cowboys, he led the league in interceptions in three seasons and made the Pro Bowl four times..

Walls left the Cowboys in 1990 to sign a contract with the New York Giants, winning he won a Super Bowl in 1990. He retired in 1993 after joining the Browns a year prior.

One of two players to lead the NFL in interceptions in three seasons, Walls has been named a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame multiple times, including in last year’s selection process.
