It’s no secret that pickleball has taken the United States by storm, and it’s also no surprise that the surge has come at the expense of tennis courts. A Washington Post article from last year reported that at least 10% of tennis courts in America have been converted to pickleball courts, which standardly measure 20 feet by 44 feet.
The mania has extended to Lake Highlands North Park, where the existing pickleball courts were converted shortly after the pandemic. Last year, we wrote about the founding of the Lake Highlands High School Pickleball Club and its packed after-school sessions at the park.
Now, it seems as though the park and recreation department is looking to double down on the sports’ popularity at Lake Highlands North. Last Friday, it was announced that the department is seeking input on the potential conversion of the remaining tennis court into four new pickleball courts.
The department is seeking neighbors’ input with a poll/survey that can be found here. It asks for a vote on the conversion and information on the respondent’s present use of the facilities.
