The Audelia Road Branch Library will host a blood drive next month in collaboration with Carter Blood Care.
From 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on August 12, neighbors can head to the Audelia Road Branch Library to donate blood as part of a drive with Carter Bloodcare. Each donor is required to present photo ID when they arrive and will receive a gift for their donation. Signups for reservations can be found on the Carter Bloodcare website.
Carter Bloodcare is a North Texas-based blood bank that after a merger of the Carter Blood Center and Wadley Research Institute and Blood Bank, two organizations with roots going back to the 1950s. The blood bank annually provides over 440,000 units of blood and blood components to more than 200 medical facilities in 50 North Texas counties, according to its website.
In the wake of the catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country, Carter recently organized a blood drive at Lake Highlands North Recreation Center.
In recent years, blood banks across the U.S. have experienced a shortage of donations and inventory, with the Red Cross being forced to declare an emergency shortage last summer. Shortages often worsen during the summer months as regular donors travel for vacation.
