With Run the Highlands coming up this weekend, neighbors may want to familiarize themselves with road closures planned around the race route.
The annual Run the Highlands 5K race will begin at 8:30 a.m this Saturday at Lake Highlands North Aquatic Center. A 1-mile family walk will begin shortly after at 8:45 a.m, with a carnival to follow at 9 p.m.
Road closures around the route will begin at 7:45 a.m. Most of the closures can be found in residential neighborhoods surrounding the high school and Lake Highlands North Park. These roads will reopen to traffic at 10 p.m, while Church Road (blocked from White Rock Trail to Audelia Road), will remain closed until 11 p.m.
Neighbors can still register for the 5K and family walk for $50 and $40, respectively. Registration information and packet pickup details can be found on the event’s website. 5k registration fees will go up by $5 for day-of entrants.
After the race, the carnival in Lake Highlands North Park will feature local vendors, a petting zoo, bounce houses, face painting and a balloon artist.
The race is organized every year by the Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League and raises money for the nonprofit’s fundraising efforts around the neighborhood. This year, the LHJWL is raising money for a welcome sign near the intersection of Skillman Street and Merriman Parkway.
