The Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation is gearing up for its annual Festival of Lights celebration.
Taking place towards the beginning of December each year, the event aims to celebrate the diversity of the area through a vibrant display of multicultural activities, entertainment and cuisine. The Festival of Lights will take place on December 3. from 4:30 to 7 p.m at the Vickery Park Branch Library.
The event is designed to reflect the cosmopolitan makeup of Vickery Meadow, with a release detailing plans to “welcome over 3,000 community members from more than 30+ cultures and languages.” According to 2022 census survey data, around 48 percent of the population in zip code 75231 speak languages other than English at home, and close to a third were born outside of the U.S.
The event is completely free to the public, with each attendee receiving vouchers for three food items, which include tacos, chicken tikka masala, aguas frescas, popcorn, cheese pizzas, hot chocolate and more.
Music will be provided by DJ Chris Jungle, supported by performances from Emmett J Conrad High School, Sam Tasby Middle School and Jack Lowe Elementary.
District 13 Councilmember Gay Donnell Willis is expected to deliver opening remarks.
The Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation is a nonprofit organization promoting educational attainment among youth in the area, in addition to community events and programming for parents.
