After five years as Lake Highlands’ go-to for children’s toys and gifts, We Are the Missfits, known simply as Missfits to parents and grandparents on a quest for the coolest educational and creative stuff for kids, is giving up the ghost this Halloween. The shop, which opened in November of 2019 in Lakeridge Village, will shutter October 31.
“We have loved being part of the Lake Highlands community and wish we could keep our doors open,” owners Kristin and Jonathan Bemis wrote on social media Friday. “Unfortunately, with rising rent and other expenses, we can no longer extend our lease. Until then, we invite you to shop with us through the end of the month.”
Missfits opened just a few months before the pandemic broke out, and they tried every strategy in the book to remain afloat. They enrolled in the federal Payroll Protection Program, and they set up a GoFundMe page when things got tough. They have repeatedly said rent was the expense they couldn’t seem to conquer.
The couple will host a final anniversary celebration on October 26th, with treats for adults and children alike. Until then, everything in the store is 20% off until the last toy, fidget or lush is gone.
We Are the Missfits is at 9660 Audelia Rd., Suite 105.
