Friends of Dallas Public Library will unveil a new mural in the children’s section in honor of late journalist and author Karen Blumenthal. It will be unveiled on Aug. 19.
The mural, created by artist Jeremie Fletcher Bourcy, illustrates an inclusive community and giant sunflower in Blumenthol’s memory. Blumenthal served as chair of the Friends of Dallas Public Library before her death from a heart attack in May 2020.
“It’s a beautiful addition to a wonderful library,” said Friends Executive Director Mary Wilonsky in a news release. “We’re so proud to continue to pay tribute to Karen and to add to her legacy in the library and the city.”
In her life, she was a leading advocate for the new Forest Green Library and other Dallas libraries. The Forest Green Library was near her home, and she pushed for a bigger building with updated facilities.
The mural was funded by contributions to an endowment established by FODPL.
Blumenthal married fellow journalist Scott McCartney and had two daughters, Abby and Jen.
“I’m sure Karen would be thrilled with the mural,” McCartney said. “It brightens an already lively building and makes Forest Green even more of a treasured community resource.”
The community is invited to the mural unveiling at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 at Forest Green Library.
Forest Green Library is located at 9619 Greenville Avenue.
