The future Great American Hero sandwich shop at Timber Creek.

Developers at the Timber Creek shopping center at Skillman and Northwest Highway have tried a couple of different concepts in the stand-alone building between Whataburger and CiCi’s Pizza. Del Taco opened in 2015 and Captain D’s tried their hand in 2019.

Neither lasted long.

Great American Hero, coming soon to the space, is a better fit for the busy center. Jacob Cox and Danny Wilson bought the restaurant from 75-year-old Dominick Oliverie this year, and they’re crafting plans to compete with major franchises like Jersey Mike’s and Jimmy John’s according to Sarah Blaskovich of the Dallas Morning News.

The menu at Great American Hero hasn’t changed much in 47 years, with cold favorites like ham, turkey and roast beef, and hot classics like the Grilled Rueben, Italian Meatball and Philly Cheesesteak. Blaskovich says the new shop will offer breakfast sandwiches and espresso-based drinks, and eventually add beer and wine in the evenings.

Great American Hero’s new space at 6216 Retail Road will be larger than their iconic colorful spot on Lemmon, and they’ll rely on the drive-thru window to keep to-go orders humming. No opening date has been announced, but their Lemmon lease is up Aug. 15.
