Lacravivonne Washington, 26, was arrested Wednesday on outstanding warrants out of Carrollton related to a speeding ticket and failure to use a child safety seat. Dallas police charged her with endangering a child in the death of her son, Jalexus.

NBC 5 reports that Washington told police Monday she pulled into the neighborhood around Arbor Park Drive and Whitehurst to escape a driver during a road rage incident. She parked at Forest Meadow Park and was getting her children out of the car when the driver returned and shot at them, striking Jalexus.

Layla, 2, Jalexus, 3, and Janiyah, 4, were all unrestrained in the car.

Once at the hospital, she told police she had no firearms in the vehicle and signed a consent form allowing a search.  While seeking evidence of road rage, police found a handgun in the glove compartment. Investigators learned it was one of two purchased by her on March 4, and charged her because the weapon was accessible to the children.

Washington is currently in the Dallas County Jail on bond of $25,000.

Jalexus Washington Sr. was also arrested for outstanding warrants and for unlawfully carrying a weapon. He told police he was at work when his son was shot. He was in possession of the second gun purchased by his wife.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has had previous involvement with the family, NBC 5 reported. The agency is investigating in coordination with DPD.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Homicide Detective David Grubbs at 214-671-3675 or David.grubbsjr@dallascityhall.com.
