Casita Tex Mex is one of five businesses across the state of Texas receiving a $10,000 donation from Yelp Aug. 26.
The Lake Highlands restaurant has been working toward reopening since being damaged by an electric fire in December of last year. Casita Tex Mex shared last week that it would begin operating out of a food truck Sept. 18 in their parking lot along Blackwell Street.
Half of Yelp’s newly created “Make It Happen Day” fund will be split between Casita Tex Mex and four other businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and other severe circumstances, including the winer storm earlier this year.
“Make It Happen Day” is meant to reach small businesses and residents in need of improvement projects and home updates and repairs. The fund totals $100,000, with opportunities for individuals and businesses to win money toward those projects.
“After seeing all of the damage from…unforeseen events with lasting impacts, we also saw how strongly the community came together to support one another,” Texas regional manager Jonathan Truong said in a recent release from Yelp. “As a company that connects people with great local service professionals, we are thrilled to be able to lend a helping hand to fellow Texans so they can make necessary repairs to their homes and the beloved independent businesses that are central to the community.”
Casita Tex Mex Bar & Grill has been in existence since the 1960s. The restaurant had a tradition of providing veterans with a meal on the first Tuesday of every month and had partnered to provide meals for Foster families, youth and children just weeks before the fire.
Last week, Casita Tex Mex shared that it had also received city approval to begin the remodeling process at 5807 Blackwell Street.
