Cinematographer Justin Hamilton shot Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Prom concert film, which debuted Tuesday night. The 27-minute video features songs from Rodrigo’s new album, SOUR, performed in the back of a white stretch limo, on a tinsel-strewn dance floor, in a photography darkroom and on a football field with a high school marching band.
Hamilton, a 2006 graduate of Lake Highlands High School, and Rodrigo, star of the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, share scenes from a prom celebration though she missed her own prom. Her album, which dropped in May just as she was graduating, debuted at number one on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart as the biggest debut of the year to date.
“Rodrigo takes us on a trip that’s a little weird, a touch emotional, and rocks out at the end,” praises Billboard Magazine of the film. “Just like the real thing.”
“All that’s missing is the chaperone who confiscates a flask of vanilla vodka,” raves Vulture.com.
