Brighter Bites will partner with the Lake Highlands YMCA this afternoon and every Wednesday this summer (except July 7) to distribute free fruits and vegetables. Each family who shows up will receive a box of produce plus a watermelon, and caretakers are encouraged to grab a box for homebound seniors or families.

Brighter Bites is a nonprofit that seeks to increase the demand for, and intake of, fruits and vegetables among low-income children and their families. In a study, families assisted by Brighter Bites consumed more fruits and vegetables, decreased their sugar intake, made more home-cooked meals from scratch, turned to fruits and vegetables as snacks more often, increased the number of produce-heavy meals they ate together at home, and doubled their use of nutrition labels to evaluate grocery purchases.
