The Audelia Road Library will open a new Teen Center next Tuesday, June 16 at 10:30 am. The new center was made possible by a grant from AT&T to the Dallas Library System, including laptop computers, board games, and other activities. Teen performances, movies, and other programs will also be scheduled for the auditorium.

It’s not too late to sign your child up for the Summer Reading Program. Children’s librarian Carol Dengle visited all LH elementaries before school ended to encourage the kids to participate, and Audelia Road Library Friends printed 1000 registration applications to help them keep track of the books they read. Incentive prizes will be given to young readers.

Friends also printed pencils with the library’s website address to encourage them to check the library’s calendar of events. Recent cost-cutting measures forced the library to discontinue printing and distributing these calendars, so the Friends group has taken on the task of printing the calendar and encouraging website visits. They also donated $1000 to purchase extra copies of books on the RISD’s required summer reading lists.

Families with younger children were treated to a Family Literacy Program in May, with nearly 1300 parents and children enjoying an African Safari Hunt through the library and photos with Clifford the Big Red Dog. The event kicked off the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program, with all participants going home with books to read.

If you are interested in joining the Friends group and/or learning more about what they do in support of the library, you can find a membership form and more info here.
