As of August 12, Dallas reported 234 additional positive cases of coronavirus and 9 additional deaths, bringing the total confirmed case count in Dallas County to 55,787, including 794 confirmed deaths. Read the full report here.
An overwhelming number of positive cases come from adults between the ages of 18-39. More than half the cases since July 1 have come from this age range, according to the county.
Since July 1, over 2,050 children have been diagnosed since coronavirus. Fifty-two children have been hospitalized.
The increasing number of cases is attributed to social gatherings at homes, bars and other places where social distancing guidelines are not always met.
On August 12, the number of cases for the following ZIP codes were:
75218: 243 cases
75231: 1,056 cases
75238: 386 cases
75243: 844 cases
The race most impacted in Dallas is the Hispanic community. Hispanics make up 43% of reported deaths and 55% of hospitalizations.
Of cases requiring hospitalization who reported employment, 78% are critical infrastructure workers. Food industry workers make up 16% of hospitalizations, and public works employees make up 14%.
The groups still at the highest risk are people over the age of 65, and people who have underlying health conditions. However, Dallas county reports that over two-thirds of Dallas’s hospitalizations come from people under the age of 65, and around half do not have high-risk conditions.
