Garland Road is one of the hippest streets in Dallas with trendy restaurants and locally owned boutiques. It’s safe to say the road has come a long way since starting as a two-lane highway.

Originally one lane in each direction, Garland Road was known as East Pike before becoming part of the Bankhead Highway.

The Bankhead was completed in the 1920s and helped early travelers navigate the United States. In our neighborhood, it came down State Highway 78 from Garland, hung a right on Gaston Avenue and ran through East Dallas before heading downtown and into Oak Cliff.

This photo posted on the Pioneers of Dallas County Facebook page shows Garland Road along White Rock Lake in what is believed to be the mid-1930s.
