A new ordinance proposed to the Dallas City Council would allow police to impound cars used in illegal street racing and penalize spectators, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Council members on the Public Safety Committee supported the ordinance police proposed Monday and will pass it on to the full City Council for consideration, District 10 Councilman Adam McGough said.
If approved, authorities could seize cars suspected of violating the ordinance. If car owners are caught at an illegal event without insurance, their vehicles could also be confiscated, according to the Morning News. Spectators could be fined up to $500.
The proposed ordinance comes about two weeks after police wrote more than 200 citations one weekend in late April. Twenty-four of the citations were related to a stunt show that closed down the Live Oak and Skillman streets intersection. Crowds, who were not social distancing or wearing masks, cheered as vehicles with screeching tires performed doughnuts and peeled through red lights.
