The incident began early this morning, just after the school opened. While a young mom popped into the school to drop off her children, a man grabbed her purse from inside her car. When she exited the school and saw him deposit her purse in his own car, she ran over and grabbed it back from his front seat. That’s when he pulled out his gun and fired at her. She leapt into her car without being hit. He sped away.

When police arrived, they viewed security video at the school showing a tall, thin African American male in a silver or beige 4-door sedan. He was captured a few hours later.

Police say they often see items stolen from vehicles while people are running in to schools, stores or gyms. They advise people to lock car doors, even for quick errands, and say not to leave purses, computer bags and other items of value inside. Never leave a car running, they say, and never leave a child in a car, since thieves sometimes steal vehicles without knowing kids are in the backseat.

Until school lets out for Christmas, White Rock North will hire additional security to help keep kids and parents safe.

“Please be vigilant and don’t leave the car running with items left out in the open,” says owner Amy Adams. “We need to stand together.”
