The fire began Thursday night, and Dallas Fire-Rescue crews arriving at 6:40 p.m. found flames shooting from the roof of the three-story building. After about an hour, the fire rose to three-alarm status, and about 75 firefighters worked to keep it from spreading to neighboring buildings. Of 23 units, 22 were occupied. Eastbound Forest Lane was closed between Skillman and Audelia during the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans, but the burned building is unsafe and will be demolished. The American Red Cross is working with apartment managers to find accommodation for residents, he said.

Box 4 Firebuffs supported firefighters as they worked through the night.
