Richardson ISD officials are discussing the possibility of transforming junior highs to middle schools by moving sixth grade students from elementary to junior high campuses. The change would alleviate crowding at elementary schools across the district.
Most North Texas school districts, including Dallas, Plano, Frisco, McKinney and Garland, cluster students in grades 6-8 at middle schools. Others, including Arlington, Allen and Carroll, group students in grades 7 and 8.
RISD considered a shift to the middle school setup in 2016-17 due to high growth in student enrollment, particularly in the elementary grades. Officials at that time preferred a K-6 model, quoting improved student achievement by sixth graders who remain in an elementary environment.
Now that the RISD facilities team has recommended moving sixth graders, Superintendent Dr. Jeannie Stone told trustees at the Nov. 4 meeting, instructional specialists will study the issue and suggest the best course for district students.
