Before the land was Flag Pole Hill, the land was required from the Goforth family. The following is information from the Pioneers of Dallas County Facebook page:
This 1899 photo shows Samuel Church and Alice Gualt Goforth with their older children.
The city of Dallas acquired over 400 acres of land from the Goforth family during the construction of White Rock Lake. Flag Pole Hill area was part of this purchase.
“If I recall correctly, Church Road was named in honor of Church Goforth,” says Jim Foster, admin of the Pioneers of Dallas County Facebook page.
Obituary, 1961
Samuel Church Goforth, 90 of Fruitvale, Van Zandt County, a retired Dallas County Farmer and long-time resident, died Tuesday in a Terrell hospital after a long illness.
A native of Franklin County, Tennessee, Mr. Goforth moved to Texas as a small boy and settled near Garland. He farmed for many years near the present White Rock area of Dallas. He ran for Dallas
County sheriff in 1910 but was defeated. He moved to Fruitvale in 1940.
Funeral services were held in the Anderson-Clayton Brothers Funeral Chapel in Mesquite with burial at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas.
